FLOATING ORIGAMI 16/32 @ SCOTTS SQUARE SINGAPORE

Designed by artist Florence Ng, these sculptural lanterns cast a welcoming yellow light and an atmosphere of elegant simplicity. They are constructed from pieces of precision cut opalescent glass rather than traditional paper and were a challenge to make.

If the lanterns were made of paper, unfolding them one would find a square that could be divided into sixteen squares or thirty-two equilateral triangles. Immediately the human eye starts to hunt for identifiable patterns in the triangles and in the completed shape effortlessly finds a star when viewed from above and shapes reminiscent of a crown and a four-leaf clover. Florence does not claim to be an origami expert but like many people, has been entranced by the intricacies of the technique.

Standing in a reflecting pool, they radiate a gentle and beautiful golden light to be enjoyed by any visitors to the space. As the name suggests, they are a light source; rather than traditional paper, they were constructed from pieces of precision cut opalescent glass.
