A sanitary sewer manhole is an access point from the surface to the underground carriage system transporting sewage from houses and commercial buildings through pipes to treatment or disposal. Sanitary sewer manholes are part of an overall system called sewerage or sewage system. Manholes are vertical pipes usually made out of precast concrete that connects the mains to the surface. Depending upon site application and use, these vertical pipes can be cylindrical, eccentric or concentric. The sanitary sewer manholes are used for access to the sewer pipes for inspection and maintenance, and as a means to vent sewer gases. They also facilitate vertical and horizontal angles in otherwise straight pipelines. Sanitary sewer manhole are protected by a manhole cover with a frame, this is designed to prevent accidental or unauthorized access to the manhole. These plugs were traditionally made of metal, but may be constructed from precast concrete, glass reinforced plastic or other composite material. Less
